It was a ‘journey’ which brought by Lavinia Meijer & Aurelia Saxophone Quartet to the audiences in a stunning concert on last Wednesday night (18/5). Performing not less than seven compositions from 1903’s up to now, Lavinia Meijer & Aurelia Saxophone Quartet amazed the audiences that crowded up the auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine of Gadjah Mada University, Jogjakarta. To satisfy the audiences that did not leave the concert even after the show end, both Lavinia Meijer and Aurelia Saxophone Quartet finally played five other compositions in solo and ensemble performances.
Lavinia Meijer, a well-known Dutch harpist of Korean descent, was so fascinating at the show. With the work of "Danses - Dance Sacrée & Danse Profane" by Debussy in 1903, and solo harp arrangement from Jacques Ibert, "Six Pieces", as well as some other compositions, Meijer showed her skilful techniques as a musician at her age of 27 years old. In her hands, harp became an expressive-alive instrument and capable of stirring the emotion of the audiences.
Aurelia Saxophone Quartet was also fascinating. ASQ was formed in Rome in 1982 by Johan van der Linden (soprano), Niels Bijl (Alto), Arno Bornkamp (tenor), and Willem van Merwijk (baritone). They lifted up the ambience of the recital with a dynamic and energetic performance, and at the same time, also so gentle and romantic. Playing the saxophone quartet composition "Petit Quatuor" from the composer Jean Francaix (1935), in addition to other compositions which performed together with Lavinia Meijer, they appeared attractively. This professional saxophone ensemble has performed at various theaters across countries.
A special composition arranged by Sprott Wullur, an Indonesian composer that now settled in Holland, to celebrate the birthday of the Erasmus Huis, titled "HUT Erasmushuis", also played in the concert which was held by Erasmus Huis, Karta Pustaka, and the Faculty of Medicine of Gadjah Mada University. Overall, the concert which lasted approximately for two hours was very satisfying. The audiences were invited to a nostalgic musical journey through a recital of classical music by the Dutch ensemble.
