On the occasion of the celebrations for the Italian National Day (June 2nd), the Embassy of Italy to Indonesia and the Italian Institute of Culture Jakarta, with the support of the Italian Trade Commission and Biasa Artspace, present to the Indonesian public the graphic art exhibition: “THE DOUBLEFOLD DREAM OF ART: 2RC BETWEEN THE ARTIST AND ARTIFICER - AN ALL ITALIAN EXPERIENCE”, curated by art critic Prof. Achille Bonito Oliva.
Different works were displayed at three separate art spaces: the Italian and International historical artists were presented at Galeri Nasional Indonesia; the Avanguardia at Selasar Sunaryo Art Space, the American and British artists at Sangkring Art Space, for a total of 145 graphic works - etchings, aquatints, lithographs, embossings - and 8 copper plates.
A full idea of 2RC collection could therefore be achieved only by visiting the three sections of the exhibition, which presents the significant results of a successful encounter between great masters of contemporary art and Italian excellence in engraving and printing. “The collection is a crossover of the Contemporary Art History from the 60's until today. It represents an international panorama, for presence and quality, which is reliable to the artistic creation of the second half of the XX century to now days. An all Italian creative tradition”, said Achille Bonito Oliva, the curator.
The exhibition is an itinerant art project aimed at sharing, in terms of visual and printmaking experience, the research undertaken since the 60’s by the printing House 2RC, owned by Valter and Eleonora Rossi and based in Rome. In 1959, Valter and Eleonora Rossi opened the 2RC print Atelier in Rome, with the intention to demonstrate that graphic art is at the same level of painting and sculpture and not extension of these. The objective is the one to create a technical-artistic laboratory able to develop new graphic techniques, which allow the artists to create freely the graphic art.
The creation of large etching presses of extraordinary power, designed by Valter Rossi himself and all the equipment that was subsequently necessary allows the realization of large format etchings of absolute graphic autonomy that attracted to 2RC artists such as Lucio Fontana, Francis Bacon, Alberto Burri, Henry Moore, Enzo Cucchi, Sam Francis and many others who are among the major representives of the great Western abstract and informal avanguardes of the XXth century.
In the words of Achille Bonito Oliva: “The collection is a voyage through the history of contemporary art from the 1960s until today, going beyond any limits of generation and poetic expression. It represents a complete panorama, in its breadth of quality and participation, incorporating the creative traditions associated to Italy. It reveals the capacity of the artisan to elevate his role as artificer and producer of an art project with a greater benefit than the initial concept. The collaboration is a four-handed labour, devised between the artist and the producer, between concept and execution”.
Since 2007, the exhibition has traveled Europe (Tirana, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Belgrade), America (Chicago, Indianapolis, and San Francisco) and Asia. In 2009, the exhibition has been on display in Beijing (Central Academy of Fine Arts), Shenyang (Luxun Academy of Fine Arts) and Seoul (Museum of Art, until April 2010).
In Jogjakarta, the exhibition displays graphic art works of the American and British artists (Francis Bacon, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Nancy Graves, Henry Moore, Louise Nevelson, Victor Pasmore, George Segal, and Graham Sutherland) at Sangkring Art Space, Nitiprayan RT 1 RW 20 No. 88, Ngestiharjo, Kasihan, Bantul.
