Mexico and Indonesia Look at Each Other Through Lenses
6/15/2010 - Eka Wahyu
This June, The Embassy of Mexico in Indonesia promotes third dialogue of Mexican and Indonesian artists. As part of the International Women's Day commemoration, the Embassy of Mexico and Ministry of Culture and Tourism join their efforts to display a dialogue between women photographers from both countries.
Photographers Marcela Taboada from Mexico and Desiree Harahap from Indonesia gather in 'Saling Menatap [Looking at Each Other]' Photographs Exhibition held at Jogja Gallery, Jl. Pekapalan No 7, Alun-Alun Utara, Yogyakarta, from June 14 to June 27, 2010 and display about 70 photographs of their works.
Marcela Taboada, from Mexico received a scholarship from the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and for two months she traveled to Java, Sumatra and Bali, where, as she said, "began to photograph Indonesia with her soul". The people, their culture and traditions, their religion, daily activities, in towns and villages, were captured as the real beauty and exotism of Indonesia through her camera.
Meanwhile, Desiree Harahap received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture of Mexico in 2009. For six months, she traveled several cities in Mexican States from Mexico City to Oaxaca, Chiapas and Jalisco. The journey opened her eyes to new perspectives about life, and challenged her curiosity and passion to capture the real essence of such celebrative heritage through her lenses. She was overwhelmed by the fascination of Mexico's cultural dynamics and acute uniqueness in each place she visited and the people she met along the way. As Melba Pria, the Ambassador of Mexico for Indonesia at her opening speech (14/6) said, “A picture says a thousand words”.
This exhibition has been made possible in Indonesia by the generous support of the Government of Mexico, the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and Jogja Gallery. The exhibition will also have tour to several cities in Indonesia as well in Mexico.
